Abstract
Malachra capitata L. (Malvaceae), locally known as raan bhindi, is an annual herb occurring in wastelands and swampy habitats and is traditionally used in several local medicinal practices. The present study documents the pharmacognostic, anatomical, physicochemical, fluorescence, preliminary phytochemical and selected quantitative characteristics of M. capitata collected from Dhule, Maharashtra, India. Fresh material was examined morphologically and anatomically, while powdered leaves and stems were evaluated for extractive values, fluorescence reactions and preliminary phytochemical constituents. Quantitative determinations included phenolic compounds, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and photosynthetic pigments, and thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was used for preliminary alkaloid profiling. The leaf showed 55–70 vein islets and 40–60 vein terminations per microscopic field, with stomatal indices of 12.60% and 14.78% on the upper and lower epidermides, respectively. Water gave the highest extractive values in leaves (50%) and stems (54%). Methanolic extracts indicated carbohydrates, hexose sugars, proteins, amino acids, anthraquinone glycosides, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins and phenolic compounds, with amino acids and hexose sugars showing the strongest reactions in the reported screening. Quantitative analysis recorded higher phenolic compounds, amino acids, proteins and carbohydrates in leaves than stems. TLC gave reported Rf values of 0.10 for leaves and 0.19 for stems. The combined anatomical, physicochemical and phytochemical characteristics provide useful preliminary parameters for identification and quality assessment of M. capitata. Because the study is based on preliminary chemical screening, further chromatographic, spectroscopic and pharmacological investigations are required before attributing specific therapeutic effects to the plant.
